A Brief Introduction To Croatian Wine

By Jenny Wilson published on 15 May 2018

The history of wine making in Croatia can be traced back to the Southern Dalmatian islands of Hvar, Korčula and Vis when Ancient Greek settlers arrived more than 2,500 years ago and began their (often quite extensive) production operations.

With such a pervasive heritage, it is incredibly likely that you will already have sampled and enjoyed a glass of Croatian wine, even if you perhaps weren’t aware of its origins at the time. We always look forward to introducing our guests to some of Croatia’s finest local produce and, just as a small but tempting taster, here are a few varieties of wine you can look forward to enjoying on your next yacht getaway.

Resplendent Red Wines to Enjoy in Croatia

Wines made with Plavac Mali grapes are always bold, rich, and full of flavour. Hugely popular across Croatia, Plavac Mali wines have notes of blackberry, pepper, carob, dark cherry, fig, and spice.

Teran grapes thrive in the Istria region of Croatia and produce beautifully earthy and robust wines which are notably full-bodied. With notes of violet, berry, and an almost meaty smoky quality, this variety is often an ideal accompaniment to delicious Croatian cuisine.

Grk grapes produce a dry white wine with quite distinctive notes of white pepper, pear, herbs, and melon. Often referred to as the most feminine grape because of its solely female flowers, this variety hails from the Korčula region and is widely available in bars and eateries across Croatia.

Although Pošip grapes could once only be found on Korčula, this variety now also grows well across several islands including Hvar and Brač. This crisp, full-bodied white wine is award winning and has notes of apple, spiced vanilla and citrus, with a trace of almond.

Croatia is home to several renowned wine regions and the options available to you throughout your getaway are almost endless. With plenty of wine tasting opportunities pencilled in throughout your itinerary, we hope that you will find a new favourite variety during your time in Croatia.
