Enjoy Gorgeous Gemiler Island With Turkey Sailing Holidays
Turkey sailing holidays along the Turquoise Coast can be enhanced by stopping off at a variety of harbours, from the peace and tranquillity of the Skopea Limani bays to the bustle of busy Fethiye. Just off the coast of Fethiye is a small island that is huge on appeal.
The name Gemiler Island translates as Island of Boats; however, it is more commonly referred to as Saint Nicholas Island. This is because it was believed to be the original location of the tomb of Saint Nicholas, otherwise known as Father Christmas. Whilst this tomb has long since been moved elsewhere, there is still much to admire on this tiny island gem.
Many people opt to swim to the shore from boats moored a little way out. This is a lovely way to appreciate the refreshing waters and wash away your cares before enjoying the beauty of unspoilt Gemiler. There are none of the usual buildings you might expect; however, thanks to its location, Gemiler was an important stopover for pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land and there were several churches built here. The remains of five can be seen dating from between the 4th and 6th century. Wandering among these is a lovely way to spend a few hours before relaxing on pretty Gemiler Beach.
This is a popular destination with the yachting set and you will probably find some fellow sailors mooring here. Enjoy the convivial atmosphere as you all climb to the top of the hill for the very best views as the suns sinks over the horizon.
