The Cyclades are one of the most popular destinations for luxury yacht charter in Greece, offering visitors a wealth of experiences and cultural delights to enjoy. Partly thanks to widespread Greek worship of the god Dionysius and partly due to the favourable growing conditions, Greece is well known for its excellent wines, which were first produced an incredible 6,500 years ago.

Visiting Greece - Sampling local drinks

The island of Naxos is famed for its wine production, offering visitors an array of unique and delicious drinks. This beautiful island is a firm favourite with wine lovers and has perfect conditions for growing grapes thanks to its rugged terrain. Naxos is carpeted with vineyards and while many of these are privately owned, you can taste the produce of the Prompona winery, which creates the only local bottled wine, at several outlets.

Naxos also produces an unusual liqueur called Kitron, which is made from a lemon-like fruit. This drink was believed not only to have medicinal benefits but also to improve both wealth and fertility. The Vallindras Kitron Distillery in the village of Halki provides an opportunity to not only see how this ancient drink is made but also to sample the different varieties and strengths of this unique regional liqueur.

The nearby island of Naoussa also produces a selection of great wines made from the locally-grown monemvasia grape. Visit the cool cellars of the Moraitis Winery before sampling its wares to enjoy local wine at its best.
