Supermodels, multi millionaires, playboys and film stars – all frequently pictured on seemingly endless holidays as they relax, dine and sunbathe on their luxury yachts. And for many people, this is the overriding image they have of a sailing holiday. It is something for the rich and famous, not for ordinary people looking for a break.

But this perception couldn’t be much further from the truth. Essentially, a sailing holiday is on a par with most other types of holiday, and can actually even work out cheaper than a standard break if you are travelling with a group of friends. It isn’t all about fancy yachts either – you can charter the type of boat which suits you and your party.

Another stumbling block people often put in the way of going sailing is lack of experience. But once again, this is something which is easily remedied. You can hire a skipper to do all the sailing and navigating, leaving you free to relax and enjoy your holiday. Most skippers tend to be local to your destination, so they have excellent knowledge of the area and can advise you of the best places to stop – often away from the tourist trail. So it’s time to stop putting up barriers and start letting yourself explore new opportunities – who knows where they could take you?
