Located between Split and Dubrovnik, the Makarska Riviera stretches for an impressive 38 miles from Gradac to Brela. Dotted with small villages, there are numerous places to soak up some authentic Croatian peace and quiet in virtually untouched surroundings; alternatively, if you are seeking that perfect combination of stunning scenery, entertainment and leisure activities, head for the main port of Makarska.

Sandwiched between the backdrop of Mount Biokovo and a delightfully sheltered bay, Makarska is a blissfully pretty town. The main square is amply supplied with cafes and restaurants; in addition, there is an open-air market to explore. Venetian influences can be seen in the various elaborate palazzos, whilst the baroque church of St Mark is also delightful.

If you want to explore the surrounding countryside, there are plenty of well-marked hiking trails. If you still have the energy in the evening, there are some lively beach bars offering drinks and dancing.

Most people visit here for the great beaches. Some are ideal for families, offering decent facilities and a variety of water sports such as jet skis and pedalos. Others are perfect for those wanting to swim or sunbathe in peace. Whatever you are seeking, the Makarska Riviera is sure to suit.
