Greece has long been a popular destination for sailing holidays due to the gorgeous weather, stunning blue waters and great number of fascinating islands to explore. Hydra is often referred to as the gem of the Saronic Gulf, and with good reason. Not only is the island steeped in rich history but has some of the most spectacular scenery you will ever see. Much of the island’s charm lies in the fact that motor vehicles are not permitted, with donkeys and mules doing all the heavy lifting. The resulting tranquil atmosphere is why people return here year after year.

The picturesque port is where Hydra comes to life, with tiers of stone houses providing a stunning backdrop to the action. Relax at one of the many cafes with a refreshing drink and watch the world go by. A visit to the Lazaros Koundouriotis Historical Mansion situated high above the harbour is the ideal opportunity to see some of the ancient art and culture of the island, while the Historical Archives Museum explores Hydra’s rich naval history. Dinner at one of the many quayside restaurants is guaranteed to not only feature the freshest, most delicious seafood, but also a spectacular sunset.

After a few days at sea you may well want to stretch your legs with a walk around the charmingly rugged terrain of the island. Hiking is one of the most popular activities here and navigation is easy thanks to several trails clearly marked from the harbour. The hour-long trek up to Moni Profiti Ilia is well worth the effort. This monastery complex is not only packed with stunning religious icons but offers breathtaking panoramic views over the island. Climb to Mt Eros, the highest point on the island, or follow the coastal path to the enchanting fishing port of Kamini.

The combination of a tranquil setting, spectacular views and a relaxed pace of life makes Hydra a perfect stop off on your yacht charter in Greece.
