The islands in and around the Mediterranean are home to some of the most widely celebrated wine producers in the world. If sitting down to dinner accompanied by a glass of the finest local produce sounds like a wonderful way to spend the evenings during your sailing getaway, here are just a few of the local specialties to look forward to.

Indulge in delicious wines - Local produce to tempt your tastebuds

CLASSIC CROATIAN FLAVOURS

The production of wine in Croatia can be traced back to settlers from Ancient Greece, who established vineyards on the islands of Hvar, Korčula and Vis more than 2,500 years ago. In the Dalmatia region, white wines are enormously popular. Grk is a variety of white grape grown predominantly on Korčula. The literal translation of Grk is “bitter”, however its wine is dry and aromatic, with slight hints of refreshing pine. Other varieties to look out for are Vugava, with grapes predominantly cultivated on Vis island, and Prosec, the best varieties of which are made on the islands of Brac and Hvar.

ENJOY ITALIAN WINE ON YOUR SAILING GETAWAY

With more than one million established vineyards, Italian wines are, unsurprisingly, varied and widely renowned. The origins of Malvasia delle Lipari can be traced back to antiquity, and although many more modern and popular dry white and red wines have reduced demand for this sweet variety, there are several local producers keen to ensure its survival. Tasca d’Almerita is another Italian wine to look out for. Produced in Salina, it is delightfully aromatic and well balanced, with hints of candied fruits, lemongrass, and black pepper.

GLORIOUS GREEK WINES

The earliest evidence of wine production in Greek dates to more than 6,500 years ago, where wine was typically produced by households or small communities. As the supposed birthplace of the Greek God of wine, Dionysus, it is perhaps unsurprising to learn that Naxos has long been an island proud of its wine production. Restaurants and local eateries will have menus bursting with locally produced varieties, so don’t be afraid to ask for some recommendations to accompany your meal!
