By Yacht Getaways Team published on 9 October 2017

Located just off the south coast of Hvar, the island of Šćedro has been gifted with infinite levels of beauty and charm, both of which far outweigh its small size. Famous since ancient times for its safe harbours, here are just a few things you can look forward to experiencing during your sailing getaway.

Sit Back, Relax, and Enjoy the Views

As soon as you step foot on Šćedro you’ll be struck by just how picturesque its natural beauty is. The way the sunshine hits the water, transforming the waves into shimmering forces gently lapping at the shoreline is almost hypnotic, and the calming atmosphere is only heightened by scent of pine trees and fragrant wild herbs drifting gently with the breeze. You may even have the chance to see some bottlenose dolphins swimming through the calm waters!

Explore the Abandoned Village of Nastane on your Sailing Getaway

The island once had two main settlements, but aside from two houses in Nastane, they are now mostly deserted. After spending some time wandering, admiring the charming architecture and beautiful hidden coves, we recommend enjoying one of the island’s four taverns, each serving an array of ultra-fresh seafood, traditional dishes and delicious local wines.

Take in Some Stories of Šćedro’s Ancient History

Discoveries in the waters around Šćedro suggest this now peaceful destination may once have been the location for one of the most brutal battles between Ceasar and Pompeius in 47 BC. On land, a series of footpaths link many of the island’s sights, including historical monuments and the remains of a monastery which was abandoned in the 18th century following a series of attacks by pirates. Legend has it that the last remaining monk unhinged the doors of the monastery and used them to sail over to safety in Hvar.

Šćedro may only cover around 8 square miles but with plenty to take in and many beautiful spots in which to sit and enjoy your surroundings, it remains one of our favourite locations in this very special part of the world.
