Of the many beautiful islands to explore in the Cyclades, Ios is one of the most enchanting. The island is extremely busy during the peak season of June to August due to its reputation as one of the best places to party. Whether you visit outside these months or simply prefer your holiday to have a more leisurely pace, yacht charters in Greece are the ideal way to see this gem.

Sailing Greek islands - Discovering beaches

If you want all the elements of a classic Greek getaway, this is the place to visit. The architecture is absolutely typical of the region, with whitewashed houses climbing the hillsides, their blue roofs echoing the surroundings seas. The island’s capital, Hora, is a lovely example of a traditional village, packed with a maze of winding streets. Head to the main square of Plateia Valeta for a spot of people-watching or visit the local cathedral to see one of the island’s most visited sights.

Not to be missed are the famous Ios windmills. These peculiar mills on the top of a slope were originally used for processing grain and some have now been converted into desirable homes; however, these fascinating buildings have lost none of their whimsical charm.

The port of Ormos has ample rustic tavernas to try, while nearby Gialos beach is sheer sandy perfection. Mylopotas beach to the south attracts more visitors and is perfect for those who enjoy a party vibe. Manganari beach has stunning white sands, while the water at Agia Theodoti is just lovely.

If it is culture you are seeking, take a trip to Skarkos, located a little way outside Hora. The ancient settlement has several ruins to explore and some carefully-restored walled terraces. Venture to the northernmost point of the island to visit Cape Gero Angeli, believed to be the site of Homer’s grave. While there is very little to see, the coastal views are breathtaking.

The perfect mix of rustic charm, great beaches and interesting culture, Ios is quite rightly recognised as a real Cyclades treasure.
