If you have never chartered a yacht before, you are in for a treat; however, you may be feeling a little apprehensive about what life on board is actually like. Don’t worry – here we have some handy hints to help out.

Sailing trips for beginners - What to expect onboard

Be prepared

You have probably planned every aspect of your sailing holiday as far as possible, which is fantastic, but there may be one or two elements that are beyond your control. The weather in Croatia is largely lovely and the seas relatively calm, which makes boat hire in Croatia an excellent choice for novices; however, there may be days when the seas are a little rougher. Don’t forget to take medication with you if you think you may suffer from seasickness, while packing a couple of jumpers and a light raincoat in case the weather turns inclement is a sensible precaution.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Your skipper is there to help you make the most of your holiday. If this simply means you would like to them to take care of the sailing and prepare some of the meals, that’s fine; however, if you would like to get more involved in learning how to sail, don’t be shy. They will be delighted to teach you the basics so that you can really get the most out of your sailing break.

Embrace the space

Luxury yachts will naturally be roomier than smaller sailing vessels, but they will still require you to spend time in close quarters with other people. If you are sailing with a group of friends or family, hopefully you will all get on brilliantly, but remembering to be considerate of other shipmates will make the holiday better. Try to keep luggage stowed away and clear clutter as you go so that your boat stays as tidy as possible and you all have the maximum amount of room to enjoy.

With a little preparation and knowledge, combined with a sense of humour and adventure, you are certain to enjoy your first time aboard.
